Grey & Tortoiseshell Silkies

My tortoiseshell roosters really do display that rich color you see- it is simply gorgeous and they strut around like this all the time. Tortoiseshell IS NOT a recognized silkie color and must be shown in AOV (Any Other Variety). This means that you can show them but it's unlikely that you will be in the competition for the best of breed awards and confined to competing with other unusual colors if any are present.. Still I found it fun and interesting to show them despite the fact that they were almost certianly not in the running for the higher awards. I got many, many comments and questions on them because they are beautiful and unusual. I would like to see more people showing their non standard colored silkies, after all life is not all black and white (and blue, and buff, etc) and variety is the spice of life. This pen needs work, I know that, and with only a few hens I need to increase my breeders. Working on that now and am getting several nice grey and one or two tort babies to grow out. These are a derivative of grey but should not be used in a breeding program for show greys as they carry the gene for red coloring. This can be bred out with work, if somoene is willing to do the work.
