The Rottweiler

"And the Almighty said to Merlin, Protect my lands and serve my people .
So Merlin conjured up a Protector unlike anything known to man and above.
Slowly he breathed into it life.
From the Glory above and the Fires from Hell below he forged a Beast.
And the Mighty Rottweiler came into being."

The Rottweiler as a breed has been badly maligned and damaged by irresponsible owners and breeders. They are not a viscious breed...however they do have the instinct to protect and left to their own devices without training they will do as their instincts dictate and sometimes they make mistakes. They are large, powerful dogs. Such a dog requires a handler of similar strong temperament who kindly but firmly enforces "because I said so and I am the boss here, that's why." Those with a very permissive nature need not apply. This is a dog that is of dominant nature generally and needs that in it's owner and has a hard time respecting and complying with anything less but cannot and will not respect an abusive or violent owner.

My thoughts on these irresponsible people that make these dogs viscious and misbehaved thinking it is "cool". It is not cool to not be able to control your dog. You look like an idiot being drug around by a dog you keep hollering ignored commands at. It isn't cool to have everyone to be afraid to come up and say hi because your dog has no idea about proper behavior, it isn't cool to not be able to turn your back on your dog for even a second or to have to lock him away from everyone for fear of their injury rather then proudly showing him off to the world. It isn't cool that your dog is willing to hurt and possibly kill other dogs and/or small children.

Now for what is REALLY cool- My dog can be controlled as well off leash as on- verbal or hand signal. While your dog is wildly throwing itself around and foaming at the mouth to get to my dog- my dog is quietly remaining at my side off leash. Where you have to seclude your dog..mine moves freely among people of all sizes, genders and colors...everyone sees what a cool dog I have. And as your dog strains and lunges...my dog and I will turn away in uinson (my dog and I giving your dog and yourself scornful looks as we turn away). Oh yes my dog is quiet and calm and contained...but be forewarned...contained is the operative word. Think he won't protect me if really needed?...think again. And while your dog is being sadly put to sleep because YOU didn't do your job....my dog has accomplished exactly the same level of protection without so much as touching the bad guy...my dog doesn't do overkill.

I'll tell you right now what is "cool" a dog that listens to the barest whisper of a command with precision as other dogs are making fools of themselves all around you. Whats SUPREMELY cool is when YOUR dog behaves better then the police dog that just showed up in your vicinity. What?!? You think my dog is "cool" and is he available for breeding?Looking at your dog who is still pulling and snarling and fussing while you are standing there thinking you are SO "cool")....I don't think so...thanks anyway.

Be REALLY cool- train your dog early and well.

How Rottweilers are-
A MUST READ for someone considering getting a rotty of any age.

The Rottweiler is said to be descended from the drover dogs of ancient Rome. These mastiff-type dogs accompanied the Roman Legions across the Alps herding their cattle and guarding their camps. One such camp, on the banks of the Neckar River in what is now southern Germany, was the origin of the town of Rottweil (named for the red tile roofs of the villas built by the Romans). Through the mid-1800's, the cattle trade flourished in Rottweil, as did the Rottweiler Metzgerhund (butcher dog), who drove the cattle to market and returned with the filled purses of their masters around their necks. As rail transportation became the primary means of bringing cattle to market, the dogs were used less frequently. Legend has it that by 1905 there was but one Rottweiler left in the town of Rottweil. By the early 1900's though, the Rottweiler gained popularity as a police dog. Several Clubs were formed, and in 1921 united as the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK). In 1931, the first Rottweiler was admitted to the AKC Stud Book. Through the 1970's, the Rottweiler was a fairly uncommon dog in the United States, ranking in the middle of AKC registered breeds in terms of number of dogs registered. In the early 1980's the Rottweiler began a meteoric rise in popularity, and has been the second most popular AKC breed since 1992.
