Black Silkies |
This is not EVEN representative of my pen today, new pictures coming soon. I have about a dozen nice black hens and 1 REALLY NICE black rooster, just now breeding age and is extremely typey with the only fault being is he is half a shade off dead deep black and his comb could be somewhat smaller.
It should be noted that my cuckoo and blacks run together. If you are going for cuckoo that is easy enough to tell. If you are going for blacks out of the eggs then select the babies for proper coloring all over their bodies including beaks, combs, wattles.. The cuckoo gene is dominant and so any baby that has one of them is GOING to be cuckoo patterned though I have heard about a "hybrid" that acts like a cuckoo but looks more or less solid. Be careful. The cuckoo gene is not a color gene but a pattern gene that can overlay any color. This means that traits such as a light comb and wattles CAN be passed on, do not select any solids with these improper colors. Most of my solids come out with the proper coloration and only the occasional solid has color issues. They all are black but a shade off deep intense black, what I call vibrant black. This should resolve with more generations bred away from blues.
